Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering

The Division of Computational Mechanics and Materials Engineering integrates computational mechanics with advanced materials science to understand, predict, and enhance the performance of engineering materials and structures. By combining multidisciplinary expertise, we address challenges spanning fundamental research, methodological development, and industrial applications.

Our research integrates advanced numerical methods, physics-based material modeling, data-driven approaches, machine learning, and experimental characterization. A central focus is the interplay between material microstructure and mechanical performance. We develop predictive models for deformation, failure, fatigue, and energy absorption in metals, polymers, and composites, supported by state-of-the-art experimental techniques including mechanical testing, advanced microscopy, image analysis, and fractography.

A major research thrust is the development of multifunctional materials. By bridging computational mechanics, materials science, and electrochemistry, we contribute to next-generation structural batteries that simultaneously store energy and carry mechanical loads. We also develop advanced nanocomposites through molecular design and innovative manufacturing technologies, as well as sustainable materials for solar-energy applications accelerated by high-throughput experimental methods.

Through our Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach, we combine modeling, characterization, materials design, and experimentation to accelerate innovation from fundamental discovery to industrial implementation. Our research contributes to applications ranging from lightweight transportation systems and railway infrastructure to large-scale aluminum casting and energy technologies, with the overarching goal of reducing environmental impact, improving resource efficiency, and enabling a more sustainable society.
